Client Centered Expressive Sandtray Therapy

Overview- This workshop will teach participants the theoretical structure of sandtray therapy. The participants will use hands on approaches to conducting sandtray therapy, including interacting in their own sandtrays. 

  • If you have 15 miniature sandtray figures of many varieties, we ask that you please bring them. Please mark your miniatures either with masking tape or a permanent marker. If you can bring your own sandtray to the training, please email our President ( to ensure we have enough sandtrays for all participants.

About the Presenter

John Burr LCSW

John is an experienced play therapist and a certified Registered Play Therapist. He specializes in using expressive creative arts in the healing process. He is highly experienced in traditional talk therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy and the use of sandtray therapy and other creative modalities.

Program Description

Client Centered Expressive Sandtray Therapy

In this two-day workshop participants will learn the method of sandtray therapy through demonstrations and the opportunity to personally experience your own sandtrays. Through the use of sand, water, and miniatures, you will learn how the unconscious manifests itself and how to bridge the play into conscious awareness. You will also learn how to witness and honor the creative play process. You will personally experience a variety of expressive play therapy modalities and learn how to integrate them into a sandtray session. No prerequisites are required. John utilizes a client-centered sandtray approach.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify the phases of a sandtray session,
  • Understand how to validate a clients sandtray experience,
  • Become familiar with the use of Rogerian techniques in the sandtray process,
  • Explain the use of sandtray in a play therapy session through personal experiential exercises
  • Explain how to incorporate expressive play therapies in the sandtray session,
  • Demonstrate how to create and set up a play therapy sandtray room,
  • Become familiar with how to witness and honor the sandtray therapy process,
  • Explain the use of sand and water in sandtray therapy,
  • Summarize how to document and photograph a sandtray play therapy session,
  • Discuss and practice the role of a therapist during the play therapy sandtray session.

The workshop will take place in Twin Falls, Idaho at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI). We will be located in room 151 of the Health Sciences and Human Services Building (

  • Friday, March 29 from 9am to 5pm
  • Saturday, March 30 from 9am to 5pm

IDAPT is an APT Approved Provider (05-167) and this training consists of 12 CONTACT APT CE’s. 

Cancellation Policy

$75 of the registration fee is nonrefundable. Registrations are on a first come- first-served basis. Fees include 6 hours of training. Written cancellations received 4+ weeks prior to the training will receive the balance of the fees refunded. Cancellations received within 4 weeks of the training will forfeit a total of $125, with the remainder being refunded. Unfortunately, refunds cannot be given within the final week leading up to the training. In the unlikely event that the training is cancelled by the presenter, a full refund will be provided, or credit will be applied toward future or recorded training’s; whichever the registrant chooses.
